On Saturday, Feb 16th the News Tribune posted an article titles "Clemens Spectacle Necessary" where both sides contend
“I didn’t particularly want to do a hearing,” said California Democrat Henry Waxman, chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. “We held the hearing because Roger Clemens wanted that hearing, because Roger Clemens wanted the chance to speak in public and make his case.”
Well, yes and no, according to the Clemens camp.
It is hard to determine who exactly is being honest about this particular Congressional Hearing, but I would lead toward Clemens camp as being the repectable ones.
Clemens will be spending thousands of dollars, hundreds of hours and repeating his testimony for years to come. He is defending his personal space, his acheivements and his place in the community. What so far has been reported seems more like a witch hunt than a high level, important to the entire Country, investigation.
This spectacle cost Congressman Waxman nothing. What it did do Waxman was insure his name is part of the annals of Professional Baseball.
It is well known that had Fidel Castro been taken as a professional Baseball Player that communisim would likely not have overtaken Cuba.
Did Waxman ever have hopes of being a Player? Aside from getting his name out and an entire community talking about him, what was the point? I have yet to find any clear goal of what all this is supposed to acheive.
